In 2014 April Garguilo spear-headed the goal of raising $1M from 100 donors with pledges of at least $10k each in order to complete the Oak Knoll section south of Yountville to Redwood Rd in Napa. We are pleased to report that the Vine Trail FOUNDERS CIRCLE exceeded their goal, and construction begins in May 2015 and should be completed by October, with signs acknowledging the Founders Circle for their accomplishment at trailhead shelters along the way!
In 2015, the Capital Campaign Committee is focusing on their Footprints program, which will offer locals and out of town guests the opportunity to leave personalized stainless steel 'footprints' at three trailhead shelters for their donation of $1k or more. More info here.

The detailed September 2013 Project Plan updates the 2009 Case Statement with a clear focus on the Vine Trail portion of Napa County’s Countywide Bike Plan (NCTPA) and Napa County Regional Park & Open Space District’s Master Trail Plan. The Project Plan describes the compelling need for the continuous Vine Trail, the community response to meet that need, its design/engineering, its costs, its unique funding approach and the benefits of completing this 47-mile “heart and spine” of alternate transportation and recreational infrastructure. Download this Project Plan here.

By 2010, this 2009 fundamental study and statement of the Vine Trail’s purpose and plans had been approved by all relevant (city, county, state, federal) governing bodies. Read about our original cost estimates and other details by downloading the Case Statement here.
The idea for the Vine Trail owes a lot to the 2008 Napa Greenway Feasibility Study which emerged in response to the Napa Valley’s commitment to providing transportation options, tourism opportunities, and a strong desire to enhance the quality of life for residents throughout the valley. The Greenway is an opportunity to draw on the superlative qualities of the region. This study was published by the Napa Valley Transportation & Planning Agency (NCTPA.net) February 10, 2009 and led directly to the NVVT Case Statement (below).
The NVVTC Engineering committee will be generating a cost estimate for phase one of the Vine Trail. A rough rule of thumb is that a multi-use trail costs $1 million a mile. The Vine Trail Cases Statement has preliminary costs broken down by segments and the total is $46.4 Million for the 47 miles of the trail of which approximately $8.4 Million has already been raised. Our goal is to raise $12.5M from public and private funds and the remaining cost will come from state and federal sources.
Ongoing maintenance is estimated at $15 thousand per mile per year including trail patrols, upkeep, insurance and an amortization for trail resurfacing every 9 years. A Maintenance Plan is in the works and will be available soon!
